The Garden

Surrounded by nature and far from city noise, the villa's garden offers a sense of calm that begins the moment you arrive. Fruit trees, shrubs and flowers surround the house, and tweeting birds fill the air with a sense of peace. In the adjacent field you'll find free parking, a beautiful vegetable garden, a young orchard and, beyond, a larger stretch of land with mature cork, pine, oak and olive trees. The manicured land invites slow walks, quiet time outdoors, meditation, forest bathing, or simple moments of reflection.

Fruits & Flowers

The gardens change with the seasons, offering something new throughout the year. Wander among fruit and olive trees, pick fresh herbs for your meals, or simply enjoy the scent and colour that surrounds the house. You'll find apples, cherries, figs, lemons, limes, nectarines, oranges, pears and plums, along with raspberries, strawberries and passion fruit. The herb garden is filled with basil, oregano, thyme, chives and other culinary herbs, while roses, bougainvillea and flowering shrubs bring colour to every corner. One highlight is the magnificent Crimson Bottlebrush Tree in front of the house, whose vibrant blooms attract bees, butterflies and other local pollinators, making the garden feel alive from morning until evening. The bees here are so busy gathering nectar that they simply ignore humans passing by.

Thoughtful Step-Free Access

Front of the house & path to the pool

Everyone deserves the chance to enjoy a relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings. We understand that every guest has different needs, so we've thoughtfully adapted our villa to make it as welcoming and accessible as possible, without losing the warmth and charm of a traditional Portuguese home.

While no property can meet every individual requirement, we've taken practical steps to help more guests enjoy a comfortable and memorable stay.

From the tiled private parking area, you will find a gently sloping tiled ramp leading to the well-lite front entrance of the house. There is a 1-inch (2.5 cm) threshold, making entry easier for people with suitcases, a wheelchair or a walker. The front doorway is wider than 32 inches (81 cm). There is also a flat tiled surface from the entrance of the house, to the pool terrace and BBQ area with a table overlooking the pool area. There is also a ramp to the pool.

Your holiday is important to us. We want everyone to feel comfortable. If you have any questions about accessibility or would like to discuss your individual needs before booking, we'd be delighted to help you decide whether our villa is the right fit for you.

Our Home Town

Vila Nova de Poiares

Vila Nova de Poiares is a welcoming rural town in the heart of the Coimbra district, nestled between the beautiful Serra da Lousã and the peaceful Mondego Valley.

Life here unfolds at a gentler pace, where neighbours still greet one another by name, the local bakery fills the morning air with the aroma of freshly baked bread, and Sunday lunch is a cherished tradition shared with family and friends.

Whether you're exploring the famous N2 Route, discovering the hidden gems of Central Portugal, or simply seeking a slower way of life, Vila Nova de Poiares offers an authentic Portuguese experience that's becoming increasingly hard to find. It's the kind of place visitors come to for a holiday... and quietly find themselves imagining what it would be like to call it home.

Location

Where Exactly Are We?

Vila Nova de Poiares is one of those places that most visitors have never heard of... until they arrive and fall in love with it!

Nestled in the Coimbra District, right in the heart of central Portugal, it's perfectly placed between Lisbon and Porto. That means you're close enough to explore some of Portugal's most famous places, yet far enough away to enjoy the peace, fresh air, and slower pace of the countryside.

If you're flying into Portugal, getting here is surprisingly easy. From Lisbon Airport, the drive takes around 2½ hours (North), while Porto Airport is just 1½ hours away…

On Portugal's Iconic Route

The N2 — Portugal's Route 66

The Estrada Nacional 2 stretches 739 kilometres from Chaves in the far north to Faro on the southern coast, crossing 11 districts, 32 municipalities and some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the country. It is the only road in Europe that traverses an entire nation from top to bottom, winding through mountains, vineyards, cork forests, whitewashed villages and river valleys along the way.

Sunrise Villa Alvorada sits approximately 5 kilometres from the N2 — the closest easy definable access — making it a natural base for travellers driving the full route or simply exploring a scenic stretch of it for a day. Whether you are collecting your official N2 passport stamps or wandering without a plan, you are perfectly placed to jump on and off Portugal's most storied road.

The Home of Chanfana

No visit to Vila Nova de Poiares is complete without tasting its most famous local dish, Chanfana. Tender goat is slowly roasted for hours in local red wine, garlic and fragrant bay leaves, traditionally cooked in handcrafted black clay pots that give the sauce its deep, unmistakable flavour. Served piping hot in family-run restaurants with crusty Portuguese bread and a glass of local wine, Chanfana is more than a meal, it is a taste of Central Portugal's heritage: hearty, comforting and unforgettable, the kind of dish that has visitors planning their next visit before they have even finished the last bite.

Riverside Afternoons

There is something timeless about a lazy afternoon by the river: warm sunshine on your skin, the laughter of children echoing across the water, the cool relief of slipping into the river on a hot summer's day, and long picnics shared beneath the shade of towering trees. Just a short drive from the villa, Praia Fluvial da Ribeira is one of those special places where time seems to slow down. Pack a picnic, bring a good book, take an unhurried swim, or simply stretch out under the trees and let the peaceful surroundings wash over you.

Weekly Market & Cafés

Spend a morning wandering through the bustling weekly market, where stalls overflow with sun-ripened fruit, just-picked vegetables, local cheeses, fragrant olives, fresh bread and golden jars of honey. The air fills with the chatter of neighbours, the friendly calls of vendors and the aromas of traditional Portuguese food. When your basket is full, settle into a family-run café in the town square, order a rich Portuguese espresso, and soak up the easy rhythm of local life.

Festivals & Traditions

One of the joys of discovering Portugal is never knowing which celebration you might stumble upon next. Almost every community, from tiny hilltop villages to bustling cities, holds its own annual festival, filled with music, laughter, food and traditions passed down through generations, and most, including the live summer concerts, are free to attend. Here in Vila Nova de Poiares, the famous Feira da Chanfana brings the town to life, and throughout the summer you will find colourful festivals with sparkling lights, fireworks, local food stalls and families gathering in the village squares.

Nature at Your Doorstep

Wake to birdsong, breathe the fresh mountain air, and let the day unfold at your own pace. Spend a morning hiking through the enchanting Lousã Mountains, paddle a kayak along the crystal-clear Mondego River, cool off with a swim at a river beach, or book a local guide and try your hand at fishing. If you are feeling adventurous, hop into an off-road buggy and discover hidden valleys, panoramic viewpoints and quiet mountain trails that few visitors ever find, then return to the comfort of the villa at the end of the day.

Everything You Need, Just Minutes Away

Enjoy the peace of the Portuguese countryside without feeling far from everyday comforts. Exploring rural Portugal is best done by car, giving you the freedom to discover charming villages, scenic mountain roads, hidden river beaches and breathtaking viewpoints at your own pace. From the villa, supermarkets, grocery stores, pharmacies, a health centre, a laundromat and other essential services are all just a short drive away, striking the perfect balance of rural charm and modern convenience.

Khloe

Originally from Canada, I made Portugal my home in 2021 and quickly fell in love with the peaceful countryside, the rich history and the genuine warmth of its people. What began as a new chapter in my own life has become a passion for helping others discover everything this remarkable country has to offer.

Sunrise Villa Alvorada was a labour of love that I wanted to make it more than just a place to stay.. I wanted it to be a place to slow down, experience authentic Portugal and feel genuinely welcome.

As your host, I want you to enjoy the Portugal I fell in love with: the scenic back roads, hidden river beaches, traditional villages, bustling local markets, family-run restaurants and breathtaking landscapes that make Central Portugal so special. Everything in the house was chosen for your comfort and any recommendations I share, comes from personal experience and places I truly love.

For me, hospitality has always been about people. Over the years, I've been fortunate to earn many five-star reviews across different cities and hosting platforms, because I genuinely care about every guest's experience. My goal is simple: to make you feel relaxed, comfortable and completely at home. Whether you need recommendations for a day trip, a favourite local restaurant, or simply a peaceful place to unwind, I'm here if you need me while always respecting your privacy.

I also share the property with my sweet, gentle dog and friendly cat. They know they are not allowed to enter the guest rooms, but you'll certainly see them in and around the villa. Many guests tell me they love having them as part of the peaceful atmosphere, and they often become an unexpected highlight of their stay.

I also help people in another way.. as a real estate agent. Again, related to my goal to help people and in this situation, help people who dream of making Portugal their home. Having made the journey myself, I understand the excitement, the questions and sometimes the uncertainty that come with relocating to another country.

Whether you're looking for information about planning a move, attain a visa, buying your dream property, and all the other services that go with a house, I'm always happy to share my knowledge and experience.

Some guests leave with wonderful holiday memories. Others leave inspired to begin a new chapter in Portugal. Whatever brings you to Sunrise Villa Alvorada, I hope you'll leave feeling a little more connected to this beautiful country than when you arrived.

Whether you're visiting Portugal for a week or considering a lifetime here, I'd be honoured to be part of your journey.

Happy Guests, Happy Memories

Sunrise Villa Alvorada is without a doubt one of the best places we have ever stayed. We have stayed in five-star hotels across Texas and in boutique hotels in Costa Rica, and Sunrise Villa outshines them all.

We had the best time staying at Denise's place! From the start, she gave us super clear directions that made getting there a breeze. The house was spotless and had everything we could possibly need. It really felt like a home away from home.

Denise is a great host, super friendly and goes out of her way to make you feel at home. The rooms, the garden, the swimming pool and all the different areas you can sit outside are simply wonderful. You are surrounded by nature, which is exactly what we were looking for. Thanks Denise! We will be back!

Thinking of Moving?

Stay a week… Then maybe stay forever!

Many guests fall for Central Portugal and ask me the same type of question: How can we move here? Can you help us?

My answer is always, Yes! I can help! I have been working as a real estate agent for more than 5 years and my focus is on helping people outside Portugal to move here.

I do more than just find your dream home! I guide you through visa applications, finding a trusted notary, house inspector, lawyer, property purchase, home service set up, etc. Everything from A to Z, since the small details matter and make all the difference when moving countries.

If Portugal is something you want information on, please reach out!
